Doug Anakin Scholarship for Outdoor Pursuits

This award recognizes a John Abbott student who displays a commitment towards outdoor education through his/her involvement in outdoor pursuits.

Who is Doug Anakin?

Doug taught physical education for 35 years; the last 19, at John Abbott College. He was hired to develop the outdoor education program, and was so successful that many CEGEPs have since modeled their programs after ours.

Doug was a very popular teacher whose fame extended far beyond the college. He was a member of the “Miracle Team,” which won the bobsledding gold medal for Canada at the 1964 Winter Olympics. He also pioneered the luge program for Canada through his involvement at the international level.

Doug has motivated hundreds of students through his enthusiasm for the outdoors, concern for the environment and involvement in the community. Through his leadership, he has raised their environmental awareness and encouraged them to incorporate outdoor pursuits into their lifestyles.

Doug retired from John Abbott in 1990. This scholarship was established to honour his many years of commitment to outdoor pursuits.
