OUR PROGRAM
Youth and Adult Correctional Intervention technicians play an active role in the community, taking care not only of inmates in the prison system but also of juveniles 12 to 17 and adults in difficulty. John Abbott College's three-year professional Youth and Adult Correctional Intervention program prepares students with the knowledge and skills required to work in this very demanding field.
CORRECTIONAL INTERVENTION AND ITS GRADUATES
Whether providing a support system to offenders and their families, counselling young people with behavioural problems, dealing with runaways or counselling victims in battered women's shelters, the work of Correctional Intervention professionals can profoundly affect people's lives. The Youth and Adult Correctional Intervention program is seeking mature candidates possessing a strong sense of professionalism and who have a desire to help others while understanding and keeping in perspective their limitations.
THE ONLY ENGLISH PROGRAM OF ITS KIND IN QUEBEC
John Abbott College's Youth and Adult Correctional Intervention program is the only one of its kind taught in English throughout Quebec. Course content focuses primarily on persons in difficulty with the law and covers many disciplines ranging from Sociology and Penology to Criminology and Psychology.
FIELDWORK PLACEMENT: GETTING STUDENTS INVOLVED
Through the program's four fieldworks, students apply what they've learned to practical situations in places such as rehabilitation centres for youth, halfway houses, prisons, drug and alcohol rehabilitation centres, women's shelters, etc.
THE JOB MARKET AND OUR GRADS
Approximately half of Correctional Intervention graduates enter the work force immediately upon graduation, while the others choose to continue their studies at university in Criminology, Law or Social Work programs.
Whatever employment path they choose, Youth and Adult Correctional Intervention graduates work closely with people in need. Graduates can find employment as corrections officers, street workers, or youth educators. Their duties may include running group workshops, one-on-one interventions of their clients, participating in the preparation and implementation of intervention plans.
