BREAKDOWN OF SERVICES AVAILABLE FOR STUDENTS

Academic Advising

As of August 31, you can contact Academic Advising in a number of ways:

  1. Schedule an appointment (25 minutes) using the Academic Advisor Appointment Module of the College’s OMNIVOX system.
  2. Visit us for Quick Advising in the Registrar’s Office (H-128), Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. No appointment necessary, just stop by and ask your quick question!
  3. Send your questions by MIO to Academic Advising.
  4. Visit H-410 (Herzberg 4th floor) to speak with the receptionist.
Academic Success Centre (ASC)

(MIO: Academic success), email: academicsuccesscentre@johnabbott.qc.ca (follow us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter) for essay writing support for college papers, ELL (English Language Learner) support along with peer tutoring on many of the college’s current subjects. Also, the ASC offers many types of workshops to help develop strong study skills.

Access Centre

For students who have a specific diagnosis and/or medical condition and require accommodations, please contact the Access Centre by MIO: Access Centre or by email: access.centre@johnabbott.qc.ca.

Campus Store

Books and course packs can be purchased online at jac.bookware3000.ca. Pick up & delivery options available.

Casgrain Sports Centre

The Casgrain Sports Centre facilities (weight rooms, pool, squash courts, etc.) will become available for the JAC community as soon as it is possible to resume recreational activities on campus as per the Public Health guidelines.  For more information, please visit our website: http://sportsandrecreation.johnabbott.qc.ca/

If you need help with writing, reading and speaking in French, come and see us with or without an appointment in the Library, room  L-025.

Empower Me : Well-Being Resources

Powered by Optima Global Health, Empower Me is a confidential support service available 24/7 to JAC students. The program has a number of professionals with various domains of expertise, including psychology, psychotherapy, social work, nutrition, etc., to support JAC students and respond effectively to diverse needs.

Call 1-833-628-5589 (toll-free) from anywhere in Canada or the US to be connected to a professional.

Services are accessible via telephone, videoconference, or in person (when permitted in accordance with public health guidelines and COVID-19 advisories). You can also connect with Empower Me through the EAP Optima mobile app, available for download from the App Store and Google Play—use the access code 45295GQ66 to create your account on the app.

First Year College Experience office (FYCE)

First year students who are struggling with their course load or have other academic questions are invited to send an MIO to First Year College Experience.

Health and Wellness Centre

Appointments are available with either the school nurse(s) or doctor(s) for all JAC students. All requests for an appointment must be done via email to healthandwellness@johnabbott.qc.ca or by MIO to Health and Wellness. Once we hear from you, we will determine the best way to offer you services, either remotely or in person.

Due to COVID, we are not offering any drop in appointments. Please do not come to the Health and Wellness Centre if you suspect you have COVID-19, but rather contact 1-877-644-4545 for further directions.

Issues related to Passwords, your Office.com account, Microsoft TEAMS, Moodle or downloading software, students can send an email to: itsupport@johnabbott.qc.ca or go to the Microsoft Team called Student Peer Online Support Group (Within Teams, click on “Join or create team” and either click directly on “Student Peer Online Support Group” if you see it there or use the “Search teams” search bar in the top right and enter the team name if you don’t see it in your group of Teams).

Psychological & Career Counselling

The Psychological and Career Counselling Service, located in H-138, will be offering the option of in-person or virtual sessions. Note that this is subject to change, pending any updates to public health directives. All in-person sessions will require the use of procedural masks (for both student and counsellor). We invite you to attend a ‘drop-in appointment’ with a member of our Counselling team to evaluate the best way we can support you. Our new Peer Support Program offers students the opportunity to receive support from fellow John Abbott students trained in active listening. For more information about our Peer Support Program, MIO: Peer Support

To sign up for one of our 4-week Career Exploration Workshops, MIO: Career Exploration Workshop and we will provide workshop dates and registration information. Workshops run throughout the semester; the workshop fee is $25.

The Sexual Assault Resource Team (SART) provides information, support and referrals to anyone affected by sexual violence in the John Abbott Community. To contact SART, MIO: SART; email: sart@johnabbott.qc.ca; or call SART help line: 514-457-6610 ext. 5555.

Harassment Resource Persons are available to provide support to the John Abbott Community in situations of psychological harassment, abuse of power, and/or violence.

Writing Centre

The Writing Centre is offering in-person tutoring in their new location in the library basement (L-023) M-Th 08:30-16:30 and Fridays 08:30-14:30. Students can drop in L-023 or book an appointment using the Bookings app on Teams.

They also have a few tutoring slots during the week for online tutoring. Students should join the Writing Centre Team page using the link here

Both the in-person and online schedules are posted under the “files” tab on the team page.

Students can drop-in and leave a message on the general page when a tutor is on shift or they could book an appointment using the Bookings app.
