The Sustainability Committee is composed of students and employees and meets to discuss all things green at the College. Meetings are monthly and open to all.
LEED© Gold Certification
Thanks to a collaborative effort of students, faculty, staff and donors, the Anne-Marie Edward Science building has earned the LEED© Gold Certification.
Located on the western tip of the island and surrounded by a vast natural habitat, the College’s grounds and campus instills in our students and staff a deeper appreciation of nature and the environment. Students and staff alike are fortunate to experience one of the most beautiful campuses in Quebec. Our surroundings and our buildings, especially the Anne-Marie Edward Science Building, provide opportunities to learn about environmental responsibility outside the classroom.
In celebrating and promoting sustainability at John Abbott College, we are promoting an education that balances autonomy and responsible citizenship as well as a respect for the natural environment and the diversity of our communities. Through academic programs, the environmental studies certificate, student clubs and activities and employee projects, we are informing, educating, introducing and integrating sustainable practices throughout our College’s landscape.
PAN Canadian Protocol for Sustainability with the Colleges and Institutes Canada (formerly A.C.C.C.)
John Abbott College is a proud signatory of the PAN Canadian Protocol for Sustainability with the Colleges and Institutes Canada.
In 2013, John Abbott College was awarded the CCAA’s (Canadian Colleges Athletics Association) innovation award for successfully hosting the first-ever eco-friendly men’s Basketball National Championship.
The Anne-Marie Edward Science Building (AME)
Who was Anne-Marie?
Anne-Marie Edward was a well-rounded young lady with boundless enthusiasm and energy. She embraced life with grace and passion whether she was rock-climbing, playing the piano, downhill skiing or helping young people with intellectual disabilities.
Anne-Marie graduated from John Abbott College in Pure & Applied Science in December 1988. Like in all facets of her life, she embraced her time at Abbott, immersing herself not only in her studies but in clubs, Student Congress and sports teams alike. Nothing was beyond her reach.
On December 6, 1989, Anne-Marie died in the tragedy that took place at l’École Polytechnique de l’ Université de Montréal alongside 13 innocent women. She was an engineering student, about to embark on specialized studies in chemical engineering.
Today we are naming this new building in her honor, the Anne-Marie Edward Science Building. This building, constructed with the future of our youth and the sanctity of our environment in mind, will now carry her name.
That those who walk these halls and learn in these classrooms feel her spirit and energy, her optimism and confidence as they turn to a future filled with peace and possibilities.

Composting comes to John Abbott College
Thanks to the City of Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue, curbside composting of our organic waste is a reality since September 2013.
Compost bins are located throughout the College, the Steward Hall Cafeteria, JAC Bistro, the Oval Coffee House, the AME, as well as in a few departmental areas and the residence.
The Learning Centre Plant Project
Thanks to a Sustainable Campus class project, many of our learning centres and common areas have been made more welcoming by the addition of plants. Students and staff volunteer to water them weekly.
In June 2013, a modest vegetable and herb garden was planted in the courtyard between the Hochelaga and AME buildings.
Funding for this student-initiated project was made available through a grant from the City of Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue’s Sustainability fund.
Our harvested herbs make their way to our food services provider.
A nearby perennial flower bed was also put in place nearby thanks to the donation of plants from the Macdonald College Horticultural Services Department.
These are just a few of our many sustainability-related accomplishments
We pride ourselves in celebrating student ideas. Students have a chance to showcase their environmental projects during Earth Day celebrations, held in April each year.
